The cottage itself is just nextdoor to our croft self catered accommodation, and is ideally situated close to the beautiful village of Drumnadrochit and a very short walk from the iconic Urqhuhart Castle. It sits in its own extensive gardens offering stunning views of Loch Ness to the East and Glen Urquhart to the North. The MacDonalds were the lords of the isles and they swept through Glen Urquhart in their quest for more power, the castle would repeatedly get passed back and forward between the clan and the crown. James the IV was given the barony of Urquhart to the Grant family in , the Clan Grant were charged with repairs to the castle and the estate.

Urquhart Castle a ruin, sits beside Loch Ness in the Highlands of Scotland. The Castle is sited on Strone Point, a triangular promontory on the north-western shore of Loch Ness, and commands the route along this side of the Great Glen as well as the entrance to Glen Urquhart. The castle is quite close to water level, though there are low cliffs. The village is situated at the meeting point of Glen Cannich, Glen Affric and Glen Urquhart, with the historic Urquhart Castle ( miles) sitting on the shores of Loch Ness. There are breathtaking walking opportunities right from the doorstep, as well as a choice of cycle trails and forest paths.

Glen Urquhart School takes pride in the traditions and special events that stem from its founding philosophy and heritage. “Urquhart” was a place name in ancient Scotland. The founding Urquhart was Conacher Ach Mohr, who slew a great boar, thus ridding Urquhart of a terrible menace. Castle Craig, although in ruins is still the current seat of the Chief of Clan Urquhart.; Craigston Castle in Aberdeenshire.; Cromarty Castle, which is no longer standing (except for a well) sat on the hill above the Black Isle town of t-day Cromarty House is located on the site today, and was built from the stone and timbers of the former Urquhart stronghold.
